The centre was named after Mr Alexander Douglas Cameron, CBE and JP who during October 1974 considered that a 'Day Centre' should be established for the senior citizens of Largs. A place where they could meet in comfort, form new friendships, have social activities and organise functions by running their own club.
In December 1974 Mr Cameron formed an executive committee and invited representatives from the Social Work Department, the local council, other charities, the Red Cross, and the Citizens Advice Bureau to attend hoping to identify a suitable location and to raise sufficient funds for a purpose built centre. He explored every possibility of acquiring the former Mackay's bakers building (now The Lounge) in the main street as a community centre in which Age Concern would have had accommodation.
When his efforts fell through various fund raising activities took place and by January 1977 around £6,000 had been raised and following several meetings Cunninghame District Council gave an undertaking that Age Concern could lease the ground which it now occupies. The original stage 1 building was opened in October 1978 and stage 2 was completed for opening in May 1980 by Princess Alexandra.
